Artist Tara Evonne Trudell (Santee Sioux/ Raramuri/Xicana) leads a hands-on bead-making workshop rooted in storytelling, memory, and resistance

In this workshop, participants will get a short introduction to bead-making and then listen to an excerpt of the Radio Free Alcatraz broadcasts while making their own paper bead from a "We Hold the Rock!" strip.

Printed with news, poetry, and artwork from original Alcatraz newsletters, the handmade bead can be strung onto a steel ball chain necklace or safety pin to take home.

Radio Free Alcatraz was broadcast from Alcatraz Island during its occupation by the Indians of All Tribes from 1969 to 1971. The takeover was the first of its kind to protest federal laws that contradicted historic land treaties with the Indians and drew widespread attention to American Indian civil rights. John Trudell (Santee Sioux) directed the radio program from Alcatraz that was carried live by stations nationwide.

Tara Evonne Trudell is an original descendant of the Indians of All Tribes, Alcatraz.

To commemorate my old stomping grounds 55 years ago, I partnered with the amazing Gloo Factory from Tucson, AZ to create this special Radio Free Alcatraz merchandise.

Inspired by the powerful history of Indian Land Alcatraz, these pieces share the imagery and words of a movement built on survival, storytelling, prayer, and collective purpose. I’m proud to have been raised free and honored to share this piece as a reminder of those who came together during such a transformative time.
